“The impeded stream is the one that sings.”

Austinite, musician, teacher, gardener, and writer.

There are some things I enjoy as a writer that I think tell you a lot about me as a person.

  • In this Age of Short-Form Content, one great metaphor, given ample room to breathe, is better than three. Attention spans are short!

  • Nature writing can be relevant, practical, and poetic. It can also be ridiculous.

  • I like to cram a flowery sentence into a small word count. It’s exhilarating.

  • I was born in the land of O. Henry and Molly Ivins. Puns and irony are my birthrights.

  • When writing about serious subjects, I resist tidy resolutions. The musician in me enjoys dissonance.

I started this site during the pandemic. It became my pocket dimension—a cozy alternate universe to disappear into when I needed to process or escape the danger of the world we live in. Over time it became a place to attempt a little professional work. I’m proud of that effort and I will leave those things where they are around the site and the blog. Since the pandemic ended, writing has taken a back seat to my career as a professional musician. But now, I once again find myself needing a space to process and grieve and document this moment of gathering darkness in the world.

But not to escape. Not this time.
